Established in 1972 and situated on the boundaries of Uwa and Sabaragamuwa provinces, the Udawalawe national park covers more than 300 sq. Kms. This national park is associated with the Udawalawe reservoir and several other water systems including Sinugala wewa and Mau-ara reservoir.
The Undawalawe park is internationally renowned for its main residents - Sri Lankan wild elephants. Uwawalawe reservoir and surrounding grasslands attracted many elephants to the park and over 250 animals live permanently. Other endangered and epidemic mammals residing in the park include Sri Lankan sloth bear, Sri Lankan sambar deer & axis deer, Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan spotted chevrotain. Water buffalo, jackals, civets, species of monkeys are some of the other mammals which can be seen in the park. So many endemic bird species are residents of the park including Sri Lankan grey horn-bill, Sri Lankan jungle-fowl, Sri Lankan spur-fowl (haban kukula), Sri Lankan malkoha, peacocks etc. Udawalawe park is a habitat for many migrated bird species including eagles, storks, etc. Waterways and reservoirs are home to many fish species. Variety of reptiles, monitors species and snakes species are inhabitants of the park.
